Are album covers a lost art?

There were amazing album covers back in the days of vinyl. They were inventive, clever, beautiful. Not all of them, of course, but there were so many that were incredible. Sometimes the album cover was better than the record itself. I remember the 3 D cover on the Rolling Stones Satanic Majesty album, and the Sticky Fingers album with the real zipper (which everyone would rip open the shrink wrap to get at to see what was behind the it), the Beatle's Sergeant Pepper album, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Boston's self titled first album with the guitar space ship. And don't forget those double record albums, which opened up like books. Then along came CDs, which shrunk down the cover from 12 1/4 inches to less then five and lost all the glorious details in the transition. At least there was still some sort of artwork at that point, but now with MP3 down loads, even that is a thing of the past.

So I ask once again, are album covers a lost art?
