A friend said I should try a vip airport lounge on my long haul flight but i thought they were for business/first class travellers only?

Airport lounges are typically for people who hold status with that particular airline. Take United for example. If you are a Mileage Plus Member, you can purchase the access to the Red Carpet Club. The amount of the fee is based on your status with the airline. You can pay for it with money, or with miles. When you get the access, it's good for 1 year. It's not something you would probably do if you only fly a couple times a year. It's more worth it for people who fly all the time.

Theoretically they're for anyone who is willing to pay the cost of membership. Usually those people are business travelers since those are the people who fly enough to make it worthwhile and who need/want the services offered at these lounges. However, most airlines now allow you to buy a one-day pass to their airport lounge in addition to the annual membership (I think it usually costs about $40-50 for a one-day pass). Check with your specific airline. They're definitely more relaxing and pleasant than sitting in the airport terminal.

You can purchase a daily pass to get in, usually it's free only for business/first class international passengers. Or you can purchase a yearly membership to join the club.

No, airline lounges are for business and first class passengers with that airline only, but private airport lounges are avalable to all passengers who wish to pay to upgrade.

No definitely not, I've been there before with my family and we couldn't have been any less 'business like'!

The price of it isn't very business like anyway, we bought our lounge pass here:

for under £20!
