I am purchasing a new kona kula, and it comes with 15 g spokes. on many other bikes i have looked at, they claim to have 12 g spokes. does the g stand for grams, in which case the 12 g spokes would be lighter? and would it be worth it to upgrade them in terms of weight to cost?

Keep what you have! Shaving Grams on a 32 spoke wheel and on a hardtail will not matter in the least....a whole 96 grams is not worth the expense to rebuild your wheel which will almost certainly cost you at least a benjamin for each wheel....Get real! carry one less energy bar!

Quick answer: The "g" stands for gauge. A 15g spoke is thinner and lighter than a 12g. Then you can have double-butted spokes that are 15/17g, where the size tapers.

Typically, 12g spokes are used on tough, burly wheels. 15g spokes are more common on standard wheels.

You're better off looking at the wheel's strength and weight, in general, rather than focusing just on the spoke size.
