aquarium sizes for dwarf puffer and other fish?

i already have a 12 gallon and im thinking about buying a 29 gallon or more.
well should i buy a seprate tank like a 3-5 gallon tank for just a dwarf puffer or should i just put him in the 29 gallon or more?i think im going to buy both tell me your opinion
 
I would get the dwarf puffer his own tank, they can be pretty aggressive. 5 gallons is the minimum size for a dwarf puffer.
 
5 Gallons is too small for a dwarf puffer fish. Even if it is just one fish. What would stop you from putting it with other fish. What type of fish are you wanting to get, they may be compatible. If you decide to have him in his own tank I wouls get a ten gallon tank or larger. Or keep him in your twelve.
 
5 gallons is the barest minimum for 1 dwarf puffer, it is possible BUT you need to be grand master with maintaining water quality, dwarf puffers are super senstive to water parameters.

In your 12 gallon, provided the filter has been well matured, it's densely planted, you could try a group of 5 or so BUT if possible, try and sex them before you buy. Males are fiercely territorial and will fight to the death, one male with several females or all female is best.

As for tankmates, these must have a species tank. They are notorious fin nippers and will harass other fish. Occasionally Otocinclus can work - otos are just as delicate as dwarfs when it comes to water quality.
 
Dwarf puffers really should be alone, they tear up most other fish. I have a 10 gallon with 5 in it. There are also 2 Ottos and plants. They have so much room. Remember, you need to feed most live food like bloodworms or watersnails. They won't eat flakes.
