Just recently, I found that two of my quite expensive road bikes have been stolen from my apartment hallway. My third bike was a heavy inexpensive mountain bike and that was left spared.
Our apartment has five units and one communal locked entry way. I've stored by bike downstairs and locked my two bikes together with Kryptonite u-bar. Still, they took both of them locked together!
I went and posted a warning notice to all the tenants informing them that I filed a police report on the bike theft. Later that night, my drunk neighbors came home and brought 3 of their girl friends and five very shady looking guy friends. Two of the girls, (my neighbors) were obnoxiously and loudly screaming/reading the whole letter in the hallway and so I heard and looked through the peek hole. My brother, girlfriend and I all hear them saying, "Give the bike back, give the bike back" and "They're both outside!" Then after more yelling they went back into their unit and continued to party. I went out to the hallway and saw that the THIRD bike was missing. I now knew that they had been responsible for it because I just took the trash out less than 10 minutes ago!
I called 911 and told them the incident. As I was on the phone, I heard footsteps and I looked through the peak hole and saw the two girl neighbors walking quietly as possible downstairs to return the ugly mountain bike that they just stole. I told the police dispatcher that I JUST SAW THEM IN POSSESSION OF MY BIKE.
It was a friday night on college campus so the police were busy. I called at 1 am and they didn't arrive until 5 am. Alas, the whole hoard of the thieving friends left and the two girls were too piss drunk off their a*# to hear the police pounding on their door.
THe officer reported the case to the detectives and my landlord was informed. I'm trying to persuade my landlord to support me and evict them if my two expensive road bikes aren't returned.
Does anyone else have any suggestions how I can get the girls to either give them back or get their friends to give them back?
