Mobile applications will now be offered through PlayNow service according to Sony Ericsson today. PlayNow now supports mobile movie downloads, music, ringtones, games, themes and wall papers. There will be a certain location on Sony Ericsson's phones where you can view and purchase content. Sony expects the service to launch in 13 countries (where PlayNow is already supported) on 38 different compatible handsets. Other markets and models are expected to receive this hopefully in the next year. 45,000 free applications via PlayNow is courtesy of GetJar, who has partnered up with Sony. PlayNow apps will initially support Java ME and Symbian OS. Additional platforms will be supported later this year.

Eventually, the answer is yes. Initially, one can expect to see Wi-Fi services converged with cellular devices. The first GSM/WiMAX device was recently introduced into Russia. This device operates on the carrier's WiMAX system when on its network and roams to GSM on other carrier's systems.
This early foray will teach both the fixed and mobile wireless industries a great deal about technological co-existence. In the US, T-Mobile began trials of a cellular/Wi-Fi fixed-mobile convergence handset in the Pacific Northwest. A number of other firms have dual-mode phones in the market place, however, adoption has been slow. T-Mobile is using a Nokia handset. Reference designs for PC-Card form factor Wi MAX cards are already in the market place from a number of different firms. The short answer is that Wi MAX on your phone is just around the corner.
