I currently want to join the air force or national guard reserves because I like the idea of having an alternate career. However, I do not have a civilian job as of right now. One reservation that I have is coming in contact with future employers that are not military friendly---that would have reservations hiring someone that could possibly get deployed for long periods of time.
I know that reservists are protected in their civilian employment by law (if they inform the employer before enlisting), but it seems that civilian employers can easily maneuver around this law and either not hire you or even terminate you for "other" reasons.
Has anyone else experienced this hardship of finding a civilian career while being in the reserves? Is it better to join the reserves after I have a full time job locked in?
In an ideal world, I would finish basic and AIT and find employment within the federal government or as a civilian in a military service, but...that is my ultimate goal (I'll hold my breath).
