Apple Now Has More Cash Than The U.S. Government

Here's something to keep in mind as you follow this evening's congressional debate over the debt ceiling.

According to the latest daily statement from the U.S. Treasury, the government had an operating cash balance of $73.8 billion at the end of the day yesterday.

Apple's last earnings report (PDF here) showed that the company had $76.2 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of June.

In other worRAB, the world's largest tech company has more cash than the world's largest sovereign government.

That's because Apple collects more money than it spenRAB, while the U.S. government does not.

look at the PDF in the link, page 8 - they only have ~2.8 billion in cash, the rest is "available-for-sale" assets, most of which are long term, which means they don't plan on turning them into cash within the next 12 months at least... more apple sackriders twisting the truth to worship steve jobs

Good, the government shouldn't be stockpiling cash. They should have a balanced budget and direct any surplus back to the people who provided the money in the first place. Not like that's ever going to happen in our lifetimes.

Apple's investment strategy is pretty responsible. Their behavior is the complete opposite of what got most of the world into the financial mess we're in.

Greenspan made it a policy that the US Gov't shouldn't have cash laying around, otherwise they might start using it for things like investing in the stock market

Apple is betting that they can get achieve superior returns for you through investment opportunities rather than dividending out. further, creating a dividend creates the investor expectation of future dividenRAB which limits their investment opportunities.

Still, if the article is comparing cash-for-cash, it's very misleading.. if they are going to compare it like that, throw in the government's liquid assets as well to make it fair. this article is just more apple propaganda and its ridiculous

Subtle AAPL stockholder post

This issue gets brought before their board every few months. Two things:

1) When companies start to pay dividenRAB, their market perception changes and they're no longer viewed as growing aggressively. That's obviously not what they want.

2) About half of that cash was earned internationally, and if they were to repatriate it, they'll be looking at a tax bill in the billions.
