Apple Mail alert issue?

I've got my gmail account hooked up to Apple Mail on my MacPro, and it beeps when I receive new messages when I initially start the program (like I expect it to), but if I receive mail after the program is up and running, I don't hear the beep-- does anyone know how to fix it so it beeps whenever I receive mail, not just at startup?
