Apple Mac Book Pro Serial Number required before sale?

Am selling an Apple Mac book Pro which is an unwanted gift. A potential buyer wants me to give him the serial number so that his friend who works at Apple can check that the laptop is genuine.

Should I give him the serial number and what are the dangers of giving him the serial number?

Please help
