Apple on September 4, 2012 invited members of the media to a September 12 event in San Francisco for what is expected to be the debut of a new-generation iPhone. Email invitations bore the cryptic message, "It's almost here," and a large number "12" casting a shadow that appeared to be the number five, suggesting that the event would spotlight the long-anticipated iPhone 5. Apple (AAPL) has called a press event for Sept. 12, where it is expected to announce the iPhone 5.
The company Tuesday sent out media invitations for the event, which will be held in San Francisco. The invitations, as is typical with Apple press events, didn't specifically mention the new phone but hinted at it. Atop the invitation was a large numeral 12 -- the date of the event; underneath that was an even larger, but faded, numeral five, which would be the model number of the new phone.
"It's almost here," the invitation read.
An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.
The date and subject of the event have been widely rumored in recent weeks. The new phone is expected to have a larger screen than previous iPhone models and a radio that will allow it to connect to newer, high-speed 4G LTE networks.
Shares of Apple rose on the news. In recent trading, the company's stock was up $5.15, or 0.8 percent, to $670.39.
Apple unveils a new iPhone once a year. The company debuted the iPhone 4S, its most recent model, last October.
