Apocalypse Now blu ray

Just recently finished watching the R1 release of this.

First of all, this has to be one of the best transfers I have ever seen, especially on the redux version. The richness of colour, and the level of sharpness and detail are incredible. It's one of those releases that makes you notice things you have never noticed before.

For example, during the helicopter sequences, you can practically make out the detail of individual trees on the ground below.

And the sountrack has been given a similar makeover. The work that went into not just the music, but the sound effects themselves on this movie is incredible. There are some great features on the disc that are worth watching on how the music and sound was put together. Plus some features on the sound design itself, and the mixing of the film for quadrophonic and 5.1 sound, which was not at that time the industry standard.

So what you get here are both the original and the redux version across 2 discs. You also get all of the features from the 'complete dossier' R1 dvd from a few years back.

I also understand there is a 3 disc version to come, the 'full disclosure' edition, which adRAB the 'hearts of darkness' doc. Not too eager to have that on blu ray, DVD is fine for that as it is a doc and therefore sound and pic quality do not need to be pin sharp. I have it already on dvd.

Not really much else to be said about the movie...despite it's faults, I still consider it a landmark movie...and like Blade Runner, Fitzcarraldo, Jaws etc and other such movies, the story behind the making of the movie is as fascinating as the movie itself.

My personal fave moments?

That opening helicopter sound moving across the surround speakers...Sheen's meltdown in the hotel room...PBR streetgang, a 14 year old Laurence Fishburne, a tightly-wound Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms out-there surfer dude, and the Chief...'it may have been my mission, but it sure as hell was the chief's boat'...Sheen's narration...the ride of the valkyries raid...duvalls Cl. Kilgore...the massacre on the sampan...the increasingly bizarre and surreal journey up river...

On reflection, I do find the scenes with Brando and the whole ending sequence somewhat anti-climactic...but it's a minor point, in what is still something of a cinematic masterpiece.

I saw the Redux in cinema , I was astonished at the picture quality , so clear and breathtaking .

I actually prefer the shorter cut tho . the redux has some great additional material but it drags.
