Apache SEO Friendly URLs vs physical html URLs?

Which one is better:

Example1: http://www.sitename.com/category/nokia-3310-mobile/index.html

In above example directory category,nokia-3310-mobile and index.html physically exists.

Example2: http://www.sitename.com/category/nokia-3310-mobile/index.html

In above example category, nokia-3310-mobile and index.html does not physically exists but they are generated with url rewrite function of apache by using .htaccess

Which on is the better way from SEO point of view? or are they same?
