They would have been modern humans. The main way they were different than most people living today is that they were partially nomadic and didn't rely on crops. Most would have been hunter gatherers. That is before there was known to be domestication of animals. They would occupy a region until the game and edible plants were exhausted and then move on. They would have had much larger territories to allow for most of it to be in a state of recovery as they move around their home territory.
