Anything on Horizon>New May Models?

This is my semi-annual (April/October) post regarding anything "new" coming up from Palm, as models are typically released in May and November if memory serves.

Anyone heard what "may" be available? My T3 is still humming along, but I'm just curious as to whether worth buying is planned in a non-converged device.

Thanks in advance - / p

I've heard rumors of 3 Palm OS phones coming out this year, but nothing about a non-converged device.

Personally, I like non-converged devices because they tend to have larger screens for reading. There are also security issues with converged devices. Can you use them on airplanes, etc.?

I had postulated some time back that Palm should of had a new device released on March 25th - the 10 year anniversary. Then I backed that up with another Nostradamus of a device being released before the next generation of Phone (now slated sometime between the 15th of May and June 10th).

The LD is nearly a year old as it was released in late May/early June of last year so in keeping with historical trend - something should be coming.

I just think that with all of the "crap" about the 3 phone releases that any new straight PDA type devices might make it under the radar of the usual suspects for revealing the pending releases. At least, that's what I hope.

C'mon Palm - give us something besides Windows based crape and without a cellular radio but I'll take wifi, hard drive, BT, voice recorder and in the foot print of a T5 or TX.

Amen, Cap'n M. I thought just perhaps there'd be a "flying leap" into some weird new linux based dealie - which personally I'd be game to try. Palm have always been the innovater, not the repeater - the Palm VII made heads spin long before I owned one (first was a 505!). That "soaring eagle" hit a mountain tree branch a year and a half ago, sadly. Cough.

I'd buy a TX tomorrow if the T3 took a dump. So I agree with you that something along those lines would be great - I was even impressed (yeah - I was the one!) with the feel and heft of the LD - and if it wasn't for the thought of dropping a spinning handheld hard drive on the floor, might have snagged one. Glad I didn't though - the TX beats it. My rule of thumb was always "skip 3 models, buy the 4th." Skipped the 515, the T and T2, got the T3. That means I should have skipped the T5, LD, and TX. I'm hoping therefore that the "4th," - the new one - will be the "rocker." I don't count the "phone thingies."

Something with a real browser, the wifi you mentioned, a vibrating alarm and digi recorder for all that miss them, and "boring, non volatile memory" would be terrific. And of course, something I can SPRAT. Damn It.

1,000 times on the blackboard: I will not put hacks in flash. I will not put hacks in flash. . . . .

Hey by the way - I owe you a "you were right, Mooseman" -- remember us going 'round and 'round (in a completely mutually respective way of course, although I was really p****d! hee hee) about "converged devices and the "speed of business?"

Well, need I say it . . . every time I run into someone who's "bought a new Palm:" . . . . damn Treo. sissies.

After having dumped my Treo into the water on St. Paddy's Day (10 years of Palm and never lost a device yet - till that point) I've gone back to the T5 and using a company issued BT Motorola V557 phone.

I'm going to back off from my hardline statement and state that everything will move to converged. I think most everything will eventually be converged but there will always be a contingent of separate devices out there. Where the Palm market will suffer is that this contingent will be so small that it will not prompt releases of individual devices, as it did in the past.

We are seeing evidence of this now since there hasn't been a new announcement. However, the T5, TX and LD prices have come down at the Palm store which is usually indicative of something on the horizon. It may be wishful thinking on my part. But I would like to see a High End device with wifi, hd (maybe but at least a 4GB SD capability would cover that), 400mhz processor, voice recording etal that does not have a "phone" as part of it.

I can use the T5 with the V557 to dial any contact (of the 3000). The BlueTooth sound quality of this phone is so much better than the Treo that I'm very pleased with this unconverged configuration.

I got on a rant once about converged both for and against - there are things then are still better or worse but at the moment, I think it's better not to be converged. However, time will continue to force converged devices and business will. I think we will still have "simple" entry level PDA's for a long time coming but I hope (but fear otherwise) that we will be given the option for a high end "wished for" device that gives me everything I want without a phone.

That's almost EXACTLY the setup I wanted - I have a Motorola v710 (Verizon) - who disabled BT for anything other than "> motorola products." I grilled district managers and admin types, and the "skinny" is 2 part - 1) security following the T-Mobile "Sidekick dilemma for Paris" can never happen on a "closed system," and 2) they don't want people sending photos other than @ 35 cents a crack via email. That honest reponse came from a D.M. On the other hand, a third guy turned on a T-Mobile phone, went next door to a computer shop, and apparently could compromise the unit's "privacy" at will despite the supposed "bonding" protection. Hmmm.

The goal was to BT the T3 to the v710 and do it just like you . . . except no way with VZN. The upside is I found I'd RARELY use it, and the phone call quality of VZN is best I've ever seen/heard. One dropped call - FAR better than AT&T (Cingular) I used to be with. There's always tradeoffs.

I bring up that long semi-rant to say this: I'd rather have a REAL Palm and a REAL phone, than trying to mix them, although I'm sure the quality and features of both will one day come together so the amalgamation is "all of what both should be."

These folks with Treo's, once they find out they're talking to a rabid fan and software geek, usually say something like "OH! I remember those . . . with the slider . . . . they have phones in them now."

Yeah, but you can't SEE anything on the tiny screen and you sure don't get 128MB. I don't know why Palm isn't doing the IPAQish thing and just allowing you to talk into the TX with a keyboard onscreen, even if needed to be LD-width.

I think the price drops are, sadly, due to lack of "oomph" in the marketplace and not keeping up with the Treo sales. Let's face it - Treo probably saved Palm and unfortunately the "what have you done for me lately" syndrome has hit the "full size handhelds." There may or may NOT be a 2006 release of ANY "TX-ish" unit, or surely we'd be hearing rumblings from a software developer or someone by now . . . . . nobody keeps that good a secret these days (well, maybe Apple).

I received a Nano last fall.....combine the ease of use of that device and Steve Job's forward thinking with some Apple influence over Palm and you might get a "perfect" converged device.

But for now, I've got a very good T5 and a very good Phone that separate are better then the 650 and I'm a happy camper.
