I have VR. It took two years and heavy allergy treatment for doctors to finally realive that's it. Mine is temperature based, whenever I enter a room where it's cold and their is lots of air conditioning my nose begins to run-constantly. After two years I am finally getting better, the dripping and the bad breath is improving. I am taking atrovent 2 times a day and 12 hr claritind D and tylenol sinus every 6 hrs and things are much better. It seems like a lot but I work in an office during the day so the air condition kills me it makes the dripping so much worse. Anyway, the cocktail above seems to be helping for the first time in two years.

Has anyone out there been able to control their VR with meRAB? Did you experience the bad breath as well and did it get better? It took me two years to be able to stop the dripping-that's been my main complaint and nothing I took worked, I hope this works. Any advice would be great.

I was told about 10 years ago that I had VR. They did allergy testing on me, and while I did not have traditional allergic "reactions" on the skin tests, I had a slight reaction.

However, I don't have a runny nose hardly at all. What I have is a constant stuffed up and plugged up nose -- and ears -- and post-nasal drip.

Anyone else like this?

Ive been waiting for a post like yours. How did they find out it was vasamotor? ive got a nasty feeling mine is because when i walk into anywhere where theres heating or air con i go totally blocked arounf the nose, eyes, headaches etc. Now the colder months are here its worse = constant blockage and PND, sometimes bad breath. So far no medication has worked for me. VR has to be one of the worse nose allergies because we cant do nothing about temperature?!

Hi Rich,

I'e had it all my life now that I know there's a name for it. I've always had problems with cold temps; I would get a headache, runny nose, congestion but as soon as I let the room I'd return to normal. A few years ago it got worse I had all the symtoms above but I also got bad breath and a sore thraot. Initially, the docotr just gave me nasal sterioRAB, that didn't help everytime I entered a cold room my nose would run mercilously and the bad breath would get worse and worse with more mucus. This year I got another doctor and he thought allergic rhinitis, I did not because like I said I'd had problems when I was young but it had never gotten to this point though.

Finally, a few weeks ago after trying allergy shots and antihistamines and me not getting better he diagnosed vasomotor. He put me on atrovent which stops the runny nose and he put me on (2)12 hr decongestants in the morning and one at night, so far I feel better, I am getting better but the bad breath is still there, I hope its just let over from my porblems before. I plan to give it three weeks before I say its not working.

You are right its hard to control VR because the temp changes all the time, I work in an office and the AC is on all the time which was the thing that made me so worse but now with atrovent and the decongestants I feel better I don't dread meetings, I use too because if I had an 1 hour meeting in a board room the air would be blazing and my nose would begin to run and then the symptoms would start including the BB.

I hope it works. You should try it, to see if it helps you the atrovent. Since your problem is heat I would try atrovent and a OTC decongestant first to see if it helps, it will certainly help the smell. Right now I still smell bad but with me now controlling the dripping its 100% better than it was two weeks ago. I just can't wait until I can say and fell like I have this under control again.

Hi Colinette and all other readers of this post, i have VR but (likr colinette) - i do only have issue with my 1-side nose blocked. Due to this, i have to breath sometimes from mouth. Tried many sprays and pills but does not work for me. Is there any surgery or any medicine which can permanently get rid of this. Pls revert.

I shall try that medication, is it over the counter? I was diagnosed with an 'allergic nose' and rhinitis around 5 years ago, but like you i really think its VR. Ive just put it to the test, my nose was pretty clear before i used my laptop, then a few minutes later im blocked up. For some reason over the last 3 months its been chronic, especially the PND and congested head. I also get a cough with it. I shall definately try what you say and thank you. Keep me posted how you progress.

I have had vasomotor rhinitis for years and had a HORRIBLE time with the blocked nose until the dr. told me I had a deviated septum. Had that taken care of and the breathing is better, but I am DEADLY allergic to things like perfume, essence of any kind, chemicals, fire places and you name it. I was told today by a dr. that there is no cure for vasomotor rhinitis and I believe it. Don't misunderstand me because I do believe some medications help a little. The best relief I have had is from acupuncture.

I was just diagnosed with VR also. Had deviated septum surgery last year and that helped one side. Got allergy tested and everything came back negative. I have tried everything under the sun supplement-wise. I have to have 1 spray of Afrin before I go to sleep at night- If I dont Ill wake up in a panic at 12-4am because I cant breath out of one side. So aggravating! Im going to try acupuncture soon. If that doesnt work, maybe Ill look into silver nitrate applications. I dont want to be on any drugs, I want to fix the problem and not have to deal with it.

For what this is worth: I have been told by a couple of drs. that Afrin should only be used very sparingly. It can have adverse effects.

Atrovent is not over the counter its presciption but it stops the dripping and a decongestant will stop the swelling, so all together I'd say you'd feel better with them both. I still take an antihistamine as well because I did test positive for stuff. I also read that it normal to have both VR and allergic rhinitis so I will keep up with it all. I feel great very little congestion and the extra mucus is gone as well but I still have the bad breath pretty bad. Nothing takes it away or improves it so frustrating. I can even smell it when I breath through my nose which is crazy to me. I just wish I was normal again. Keep me posted with your progress.

Would like some opinions on my situation - I suffer with severe runny nose whenever I run or cycle outside. I've been told (not by a doctor) that this is a form of VR and is treatable with Atrovent nasal spray. I'm certain that air temp plays a role in this...however, even on warmer days...my nose will still run like a faucet particularly while riding my bicycle. It's so bothersome, that I cannot lower my head for even a split-second, because the stuff will literally just stream out of my nose non-stop. As soon as I'm done riding or running, the runny nose stops. I am contemplating a visit to my doctor to request a script for Atrovent...but I'd like to know if I'm going in the right direction with this. Can Atrovent be used for a situation like mine - where my nose only runs during certain activities, and is fine otherwise?

Edited to add - I generally do NOT have any other allergy symptoms such as sneezing, during my runny nose episodes.

My allergist diagnosed me with VR, but my GP at the time thought VR just meant you're allergic to something they don't have a test for. At the time I was showing SLIGHTLY raised levels of... um... some antibody that shows you're having an allergic reaction. But I tested negative for everything.

Zyrtec and Allegra helped a little bit with some of the symptoms, but the worst symptom is angioedema, and they didn't help at ALL with that.
