anyone know why my regulator would start smoking when I start my bike?

I bought a brand new regulator and drove for 3 days then to day my bike died and the regulator was smoking and was burning hot,I bought new one cause my old one was burning hot and my battery kept dieing.so if anyone can please help I would really appreciate it.first time bike owner and got screwed on craigslist.
 
If your bike has fried 2 regulators, then I would suspect the alternator. Sounds like one phase has died and the regulator is trying supply full power through just 2 phases and is overloading.
R/R's usually run very hot normally (too hot to touch) Check for something covering the r/r or blocking the air flow around it.
