Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah
The Surrogate by Judith Henry Wall
The Vanishing by Bentley Little
The Hear Shaped Box by Joe Hill
The Lavender Hour by Anne D. LeClaire
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold
White Oleander by Janet Fitch
Keeping the House by Ellen Barker
Down River by John Hart
Too Late for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay
Almost Graceland by Steve Carlson
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe

EDIT ADD: Maybe you'd like "The Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. LeGuin, which predates HP by several years, and is just a terrific book, especially for young people who want nothing to do with romance in their books...
