ANYONE know about VW bus campers?

A friend of mine had one in the early 80's I don't remember the year of it, but it was a great party vehicle we could easily get 15 people inside it. Engines have no power. With the weight of a water bed it will slow it down even more. My friends was a stick shift and it was worn out so it was very hard to shift. It was very reliable he had it for 3 years during high school and it never broke down and always started.

My distant relative passed and I know that she paid 16000 when she bought it, but her son wants to get rid of everything so hes going to give it to whoever will take it. He contacted me. So its like, a free car for me here. He said it has a new engine and runs on deisel. its also been chopped down half an inch because of the new windows they had to put in. Its somewhere between the 1970's and 1980's models, hes calling with more details

Im completely dumb when it comes to vehicles
should i get the car
what are good things
what are bad things?
i turn 18 next month but i dont know how to drive yet
but the family car is on its last legs
so they could use it for aa while
it has a waterbed
so i was thinking about replacing it with an air matress for the weight?
and so if people sat on it they wouldnt get seasick while i drove.
