anyone into mixing?

hey all,

i am just looking at getting a usb turn table for my brother for christmas (so something around the 100 dollar range) but i want something that will work well. i know really not a whole lot about mixing, but i know he has a mac and there are some programs out there where you can mix and make your own stuff. in terms of hardware, does mixing work if you get your own turntable with usb plug? do you still need a massive record collection with it or can you mix using files from your computer... any help would be greatly appreciated!

It really depenRAB on what you wanna do with the setup. Do you mean dj-ing (trance, hip-hop, etc)? If so, you'll probably want two turntables and a mixer. A USB port is not important if this is the case. These turntables can be the typical vinyl turntables (eg Technics 1200) or the newer, increasingly common CD decks (eg CDJ-1000). There are some models that use digital formats (.mp3, .wav, .flac, etc)

If you want to record your vinyl recorRAB to your computer (to convert to .wav, .mp3, etc) then a USB turntable is quite handy. These sometimes come packaged with software to do this. If no software is included, the free, open-source program Audacity is quite good also.

If you mean sequencing, then there is some good software available, such as GarageBand, Reason, Ableton Live and Sony Acid (a turntable is basically useless here, however a midi controller would be handy)

I'm not sure how much these things will cost (especially given regional differences) but I hope you find the right gift.
