Now FYI I loved Gone With the WInd.It was my favorite movies years ago when I saw it!However I really wondered was why Scarlett was so in love with Ashley Wilkes.I mean he was such a wimy character so dull without any redeeming qualities!I was wonderign what Scarlet found so Sexy about a fag like him!
That is until I read the book.God I was really surprised and please of how different a person Ashley Wilkes was in the canon story!I can see why Scarlet was so insane about him and found him sexy.
In the book Ashley Wilkes truly matched the image of a "Gentleman" that Scarlet described him as in the movie. He was a very sophisticated man who was literally like a chivalrous knight;he love poetry, had very classy taste in music and arts, and was so well educated.
Not only was he so refined and sophistitcated but he was so brave int he book!He actually was a true Sotuhern patriotvand soldier who was willingly to die for his country. He didn't have to volunteer int he Civil War which he opposed but he did so out of duty for his country and never dared to desert no matter how desperate and bad the war was going. He stuck loyally to his army until the end of the war, fighting as a soldier despite to the end until Lee surrendered.
Also to add was that he was truly a kindhearted fellow in the book, something the movie failed to realize. In fact he actually joined the KKK in the book but he did not do it out of racism but to protect his reputation as a man in Southern Culture.
If anything he was a very liberal man for his own time who felt slavery was evil and was kind to former slaves, prostitutes, and even criminals! He actually opposed the Civil War from the start and thought of Slavery as evil but he had no choice but to accept them because directly opposing them otherwise would have outcasted him in Southern Society and brought shame to his family.
I'd say the Gone With the Wind Movie would have been a most Perfect Adaptation if Ashley wilkes wasn't so sissified and turned into a mockery that the film turned him into!
Other thant hat Gone With the Wind is perfect overall.
What do you think?Don't you agree the Gone With the Wind movie adaptation ****** up the Ashley Wilkes character big time?
