Hi,
I went to an allegry doctor thinking I have ashtma or allegries.
he tested my lung function and it was great, he did a skin test for allegries and not one positive result. Due to my symptoms (severe tightness in chest, feels like im breathing through a straw, heavness in chest and lung area, air hunger, post nasel drip with swelling in the nose really bad and occasional wheezing, sneezing, itchy eyes, sore throat, dry and red throat) he said I have asthma so he gave me an inhaler to use. That was last week, this week he told me it might not be asthma after all, it might be due to acid reflux.
My question is if the problem starts in my nose with post nasel drip all the time how can that be acid reflux? The doctor said something about when you lay down at night it could be that the acid is washing up through the nose cavity causing post nasel drip. He came to this conclusion because I tested negative on all allegry tests. I have had GERD before and contiue to have some episodes. But not many at all anymore. Maybe one or 2 flare ups a year. I dont have heart burn or anything right now and these breathing problems have been for about 2 years. I went and had 2 heart function tests, 1 EKG, 1 lung Xray and they were all normal
Anybody have any idea if Acid could really cause all these breathing problems and post nasel drip? It just doesnt sound quite right to me.
thanks

oh yes, reflux can cause ALL of those things including asthma,,and you don't have to have heartburn to have reflux, heck you don't even have to eat anything, the stomach is always making acid and if you have stress and anxiety it can cause reflux...your doctor is correct......reflux here since 2001...

wow,
thanks for the info. Guess the doc might be heading in the right direction.

My very worst symtoms although I usually can sleep thru the night. It's been so bad for the last 2 weeks. I'm awful about eating late but have been cleaning closets and things, doing a lot of bending and lifting. This is a bad flare and with the reflux I have (LPR) it's often worse sitting up and during the day. Very frustrating when you corabine the 2. I never had heart burn in the beginning either or what I would consider reflux problems. It can sure happen. More Dr's are accepting and catching on to what silent reflux causes.

I agree that it really could be acid reflux. I have both acid reflux and asthma and there are times that my inhalers do not work and it is due to something else such as the acid reflux. I think a lot of people have more problems at night with laying down and the drainage which can cause more acid to build up and can flood into the lungs cauisng it to be difficult to breathe. Did your doctor give you an inhaler for the asthma? If so did it do anything for it or did it still bother you just as much?

When is the last time you had complete blood work done? I'm just bringing this up because I have thought I had breathing problmes all year due to the high allergins and really it was due to severe anemia that caused the need for blood transfusions. If you are anemic or do not have enough iron in your blood then it is harder for the body to transport oxygen. If you have not had your blood work done recently then it really is something tha you shoudl do to rule out other things that might be causing the problem.

Good luck! I hope you find some releif soon!

hi yah i have taken some days of work.told my boss i have the flu....
well i have LPR or course, but really bad this week like you chronic PND, coughing sneezing bascally like a really bad cold thatg never goes away!!!!
plus this week i have had chronic fatique anyone else have this, i think itsw from stress, reflux, coughing at night and STRESS....

so no work tomorro...........what the hell, i never take sick days as i NEVER get sick until now!!........i need some TLC

thanks
yeah the asthma inhaler works to an extent. I was fine until yesterday when I started feeling pains in my upper back that spread then started pushing from the inside against my chest or something and really bad exhastion but I dont have the chest tightness feeling this time or feeling like someone is sitting on my chest. I had a complete blood workup and no anemia. i did have low ferritin levels a year ago and it took me a year to get them back to normal levels. I was almost anemic.
