Anyone Have a Medial Branch Block/Facet Joint Injection?

Hi all. I am scheduled to have a bilaterial facet joint injection on Tuesday in the sacro-lurabar area. Is this the same as a medial branch block? Also, what can I expect in terms of pain and recovery? They are not going to use any cortisone because I am a type I diabetic. They will use a local only and if it helps then I will have a neurotomy on these areas. Thanks so much. Lisa

Hi! I have had the facet injections and the medial branch block. It is not too bad-I had them done at L3, L4 and L5. I ask for a bit of sedation and it goes pretty smoothly, also my doctor does nurabing shots before the block. It is a very good test, because if it relieves pain, even for a little while, then you can go forward with the nerve burning (radio frequency). I have had this done several times, about every 8 months, and it helps my pain so much! I have bad arthritis in my lurabar joints and sacroiliac joints. I wish you the best-let us know how it goes. Take care, Kera4

Hi CaliGirl!

I had several of the facet joint injections, and they always seem to work great for the first two or three weeks, and then it's back to my normal pain level. I would strongly recommend that after the procedure, you lay flat on your back with pillows under your neck and knees - otherwise, you can get one heck of a headache!

Also, once the Lidocaine starts wearing off, you may start to feel the pain from the injection sites. I went to Walmart and purchased two large bags of frozen peas for $0.88 each, which made inexpensive, excellent ice packs!

After the initial 24 hours, you should be good-to-go with resuming your normal activities, as tolerated.

Good luck with your procedure!

I have had medial branch block's done in the past - no progress in relieving my pain, but I did want to tell you that downtime wasn't so bad. I was sore when the nurabing medication wore off, but some ice, and some sleep, and you should be back to yourself in 1 or 2 days. I was!

Good luck with it, I hope you get results!
