ANYONE GOOD WITH CARS? HELP :)?

Basically, I've past my driving test and am buying a new car very soon. I've had my eyes on a 5 Door Fiat Punto (2000 Model), 1.2 Engine (Apparently a 2004 engine), 8 Valve. It's in pretty good nick, so for me this would be a great car. Anyway, one of my friends told me you can't get a 2004 engine in a 2000 car. Is this true? Is the guy at the car place that told me it's a 2004 engine telling lies?
