Hi everybody, has any one had any setbacks after a discectomy and how did it turn out? My l5-s1 went well for 6 weeks then 6 weeks of hell. I think I might be turning the corner again but it was hard.

I am at one week post-op mircod. Everything seems to be going fine so far. no sciatica for the same time but just some sore back at incision point l4l5.
What kind of setback are you talking about? can you clarify it. Right now, It's like wait and see for me. But I am very carefully with anyting I do w' myself.

I think i over did it at week 5 or 6. I felt good but then I did some things I probably shouldnt have. Ive had lots of back pains since but its usually above surgey site. Some sciatica has returned as well. Dr thinks its muscular bit it felt worse than before surgery which freaked me out. Im in 2nd week of therapy and it seems to calm down a little once in awhile but its been tough.
I see doc in 2 weeks , back to work part time(i have a semi physical job).

I'm 2 years post-op for micro disc at L5/S1. Pre-op symptoms persisting with the addition of involuntary muscle spasms, change in sensation to R leg, tingling and diminished strength in R leg.

Happy to hear that your second surgeon took care of the problem and your feeling better now. I had a micro discectomy on 5-5-08 the tingling, burning, pins and needle feeling is still there, the only thing that's not bothering me is the muscle spasams. I'm hoping things will get better with time, but it's reasuring to hear a second surgeon helped you. maybe I need a second opion in a couple of months. Guess I thought I'd wake up from surgery and everything would be back to normal.

my first Micro D was a year ago and I had MANY setbacks. Started from day 1 really, but week 5 I re hernaited it. I posted about 100 messages on it as I was freeked out and Dr told me everything was normal (which it was not). Turns out a new Dr and a new surgery 10 days ago might have done the trick. since its musclar did they give you a muscle relaxer like Soma or Flexeril? That might help.

Not to be a downer, but there really isn't any such thing as "normal" after you've had back surgery. If lucky, you may approach "normal" (I think you mean, like you were prior to the injury or event that resulted in back pain, right?) but most people are never quite the same. :(:(:(

I have to agree with MM....your back will never be quite the same again. I had a laminectomy over a year ago and if I try to live any sort of normal life the pain is bad. My symptoms are a lot like stonecutter..pain, weakness in right leg, spasms....Good luck and hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones and get much better over the next few months. Take it easy though, don't overdo and give your back a chance to settle down.
