Anyone else think NASCAR isn't a sport?

I just ran across this article:

I mean, seriously, THIS GUY is the most dominant man in sports? NASCAR isn't even a friggin' sport!

While athleticism, determination, skill, and game smarts are all attributes embodied (in varying degrees) by each and every pro athlete, I believe that the TRUE measure of a professional sport is that it involves physical efforts that most people simply cannot accomplish.

Who do you know who can hit receiver, on the run, covered by another guy, 50 yards away with even a modest amount of frequency? Who do you know who can throw a ball over 90 MPH... and then, on the next throw, cause that ball to reliably curve, or drop, or go really slowly on a whim? Who do you know who can skate at high speed down the ice keeping a puck away from opposing, super-star players, and then no-look backhand said puck into the net against a professional goalie? Do you know someone who can drive down a basketball court all night, every other night, for 5 months a year? Oh, and they need to also be able to dunk, throw free throws, and hit the occasional three.

I mean, seriously, what about NASCAR is complicated? Don't tell me that it's the driving real fast -- I KNOW I could drive real fast; hell, if I could afford the tickets, I'd do it every day. And don't tell me it's the driving real close, either -- ever seen bumper-to-bumper traffic on the D.C. Beltway? Ever been tailgated?

Just because Jimmy Johnson knows how to assemble a team of good mechanics and drive in circles for four hours doesn't MAKE him an athlete -- hell, it doesn't even require athleticism; the pentultimate defining factor in sports!

Yes, I do hate NASCAR. I think it's retarded.

No, I don't begrudge people who like it. If you want to be stupid, be my guest.

But calling NASCAR a sport? That's a travesty.

What do you think?
