Anyone else having issues getting the ascend to roam?

I just got my Huawei Ascend and am very happy with it. My only issue so far is that the phone will not roam. I frequently visit a town just across the Oklahoma border where my wife's msgm8 gets great roaming service and my ascend gets nothing. My network is set to auto and I've dialed *228 to update PRL. Am I missing something?
 
Is your wife's phone using roaming package ($5/30minutes) or is it on a partner network? If she's using a roaming package, when you were switched to the Android rate plan, did they add the roaming package?
 
She had the roaming package. I do not have the package but I do have a balance in my flex bucket. Does not having a roaming package effect your signal?
