Anyone else had problems with defragging a desktop pc?

I have been trying to defrag for quite a while but when it gets to about 8% of doing it,my pc freezes then when i try to shut it down i get an error message saying that it's not responding.I have Windows XP home and it has SP3.Please help anyone,thanks.
