anybody have tips for exhaust wrap???

thinking abou wrapping a 2-1 pipe, want to wrap over the shields so it is a lil fatter looking, wondering what wrap is best for the blackest black, and what kind of clamps or ties you used any tips appreciated.... Thanks

Looks good but also causes too much heat build up in short reduces horsepower, got this from a well known tuner whose been doing Harleys for over 40 years. I still like the look though...

Wrap look great (fat) but kills the longevity of your pipes. I've seen steel headers fall apart after alot of heating and cooling cycles. Get the inside of the pipes Jet Hot coated.

I bought the wrap from evil pay. Soak the wrap as ridig has stated over night.. Take the pipes off and put them in a vise. Also have 2 set of hands if possible. The SS tie wraps are ok, but I used SS hoses clamps in a couple places. They lasted 2 years and started to fade. But never loosened up. Just use Barbque paint to repaint black. I sold the bike and the wrap was still tight and looked good.
Good luck.

Removed the heatshields today, moistened the wrap with spray from a garden hose while it was laid out on a tarp. We removed the pipes and started at the muffler and wrapped up to the header. The wrap drips a nice black soup so be careful. We tied it with the tiebacks at the muffler and at the header. Then we dried it out some, including with a hair drier and we sprayed 2 layers of black high temp engine enamel. Definitely helps to have someone to hold the pipes. It smoked like hell and the fumes are horrible, but after a while it stops smoking. Time will tell how it holds up or affects the steel but for now this looks awesome. It cools much quicker than the headers although I think its hotter while its running. When you stop you can feel the heat more I think.

Leo.....
Definately do the Jet-Hot coating. My TH has been wrapped for 10+ years and it has no problems. No wrap will keep its black. You have to spray it once in a great while.

You want to seriously consider putting on some rubber gloves while wrapping or allocate lots of time for itching! Only other things have been said, wet it and start from the back of the pipe. I've always liked the look, kind of serious/old school...
