Any way to fix a slightly crooked hood without an expensive trip to the auto repair?

The hood of my car is slightly bent ( the hood kind of lifts up ) It's not noticeable front the left side, but from the right you can tell the hood is slightly lifting up. It's hard to explain but it looks like the hood isn't closed on the right side. I tried to hammer it out, but being a rookie and all, i just made it worse. Any ideas on how to fix this would be great.
