I need to learn about jobs in the mechanical field in the USAF. I've done my research on about.com and know which jobs fall under the mechanical category however I am seeking a serviceman's opinion that is in or has been in the Air Force that would be willing to share there opinion of what they did under there job title.

Any recommendations and explanations would be very well appreciated! Please include the AFSC and your knowledge of what the job consists of.

Thanks!

P.S. I am seeking a job in nothing specific but normal work hours meaning nothing beyond the 8 hour shift and (may sound strange to say) but a job with not as much as responsibility that someone as a crewchief would have. I'd prefer to stay on base work as a mechanic with normal work hours. I like the sound of 2FOX1-Fuels, however some drive convoys during deployment. So, that is not a for sure thing yet in my mind.

Any help, opinions, and your explanation of your job would help! I look forward to hearing from any Airmen willing to help a soon to be trainee!

Thanks again!

Hubby is Fuel Cell, falling under aircraft maint., not POL, which is under Logistics and is NOT maint.

Normal hours... in your dreams. Some aircraft maint. shops are strictly days, however more of them are 24 hour coverage. Which means you could be working days, swings, and/or mids. And an 8 hour day.. sorry. They don't exist. Your official duty hours may be 8 hours, but you may work up to 12 hours a day, and you will probably be doing some weekend duty as well. And as you go up in rank, the hours don't get better, they get worse.

Base vs. Deployment... that will depend upon your exact job and the base's mission. We have been at bases where we were very rarely tasked for an OIF rotation, and others where our guys were constantly gone. One base pulled 3 out of 6 of the OIF rotations each cycle. Our current base... we run our mission from our base and as a result, we have very few major deployments. Our maintainers go out in handfuls to fill in for shortages. But don't depend upon never getting deployed or sent TDY somewhere!
