any tips for meditation?

hey,
so basically i have tried meditation before in the past and never got far at all with it..any tips at alll would be appreciate. i have a real problem switching off my thoughts, it's impossible, i can hardly sleep at night because i think too much. and also, how long should you meditate for anyway? 5 minutes, 30 minutes? i've heard of people that meditate for an hour...but maybe they start at 5minutes and get better at it? i dont know..i just need to learn to turn off my thoughts and deal with my stress...and possibly connect spiritually but im not really sure on that yet. anyway, thanks.....
