Any other Option for Text Messaging using Android?

I am leaning towards upgrading my DARE to the HTC or Droid X in the next few weeks. Since this will require a $29.95 smartphone plan, I am finding it hard to swallow the additonal cost of Texting - which I really don't use that much. (Granted, .20/msg applies w/o a "plan") ..

Are there any Android APPS out yet for texting? or any other solution rather than buying the $5/mo. VZN texting plan?

look into Google Voice...

If you get a Google voice number issued through google by your request, you can text using that Google Voice Number (separate Phone number).... your charged for Data, which falls under your data plan (29.95) but not for the Text Message with Verizon.

That might of changed... but if i remember correctly it was in place going back when i set up my Google Account through my Gmail address. I never use it because i have unlimited Texting but it worth looking into.
