Any one pay the unsubsidized iPhone price?

Stupid AT&T won't let me upgrade without paying either $399 or $499. This of course is ridiculous.

Anyone else have to pay that price? Is it still worth it at $399? Clearly I'm still considering it, but that extra $200 is giving me serious doubt.
