This is the first time I have ever gotten the flu shot. I got it at 8 am this morning. It's 10:30 at night now and I am feeling kind of yucky a little bit. Kind of achey and I sneezed and feel congested. My stomach hurts too but I have been taking some antibiotics for a cold I was getting over. So has anyone had any side effects from it and how long does it last? Thanks for replies!:)

firstly, you shouldn't have gotten the flu shot since you have been sick already with a cold. If you're on antibiotics, I'll assume you had an infection of either chest or sinuses?

You might just have an exacerbation of your cold...and yes...the flu shot could be the cause.

If you do get worse..call the doc for sure.

Tylenol will help with the aching and Sudafed will help with your stuffy nose. If you have "greenies" or a lot of mucus, it would be good to use an expectorant. In the US...Mucinex is your best bet.

Hope you feel better soon...

I've had yearly flu shots for many years with no direct side effects. The flu vaccine doesn't contain live viruses so that shouldn't be a direct cause.

That said, for the first time this year, my flu shot triggered my body to allow another virus I must have been carrying to become active. I'd never heard of this, but my neurologist said it happens occassionally.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I seem to be ok. I felt a little yucky in the night but been ok all through today. Oddly enough I had a half a glass of white zinfindel and broke out in hives and flushing on my face and chest. This has happened to me with alcohol the past 2 years. I NEVER used to have this problem with alcohol. Im not a big drinker anyway. Usually one drink occassionally but this is crazy. Now I am going to have to take Benadryl and put a cold towel on my face for a couple of hours. UGH!

I rarely drink, but wine is the worst for me in terms of reactions as compared to other types of harder alcohol. It has now been about 3 years since I've had any. I can't do beer either. So far, mixed drinks seem to be ok.

I had a follow-up with my specialist today. He explained the flu shot thing a bit better. Evidently, the flu shot is designed to cause "inflammation" which helps us build up the antibodies against catching the flu. In my case this year, I evidently have developed new autoimmune issues and the "inflammation" from the flu shot triggered other types of "inflammation" against a virus I would otherwise not have caught. I'm not in the process of zeroing in on figuring out my autoimmune issues.
