Hey guys on my way to Korea in Feb, and will be packing up stuff here in NC real soon. Gonna be gone for about 3 years, so am taking the bike with me. Anyone ever shipped there bike; anyone have recommendations on prep. I've heard it has to be drained, then I heard it doesn't, some told me to take of fairings, any insight would help....

Contact the shipping company that will be shipping your bike. Any other advice may create a problem. You may also want to contact the licensing department for the country you are traveling to to find out if any alterations are necessary to register your bike in their country.

I agree with Enzo. Check with the shipping company. The army uses different companies and they have different rules regarding the fluids. I would also check with your insurance company too about claims if the bike is stripped of the skins. Some require the bike to be put together.
Just a suggestion.

Why 3 years to Korea and not 1?

I moved my TLR three times with the AF... they just use local packers to box up the bike. I can't imagine the army would operate too differently in that aspect. Personally I've had no issues with them, however I've heard stories of opened crates with bikes upside down!

The only thing you can do is take an 'Eff-ton' of pic's; so in the event that you have to make claim for any scratches, dents or cracks.

When I (paid for by myself) had my 1098 shipped over to the UK the company, who sopposedly shipped the smithsonian bike exzibit jacked it up. Snag a couple 'cockpit' pic's. It looks like someone was resting their arm on the mirror and broke the forward fairing mount/mirrow stay. They also cinched the bike down onto a cross beam the ran right under the gearbox and cracked the front corners of the lower fairings right under the oil cooler, so snap a couple more pic's up ther too!

Good luck Moving!

TAKE A TON OF DIGITAL PICS. Digital so that you can email them to the moving company manager if something goes wrong. The DOD moving liason may want pics too if you have to file a claim. I moved a Hayabusa from Alaska to Washington state and they ruined a carbon fiber Akrapovic silencer on one side and scratched the other sides paint. They even had a crate made for the bike but still they managed to fark it up. I had taken a ton of "before" pics and a ton of "after" pics when I recieved it damaged. They had to pay out the azz for that. The moving company was so worried I was gonna file a lawsuit that they just cut me a check for what I wanted. No questions asked. I had gotten an insurance quote to be prepared to fax it in and they just said "That sounds fair, where do want the check sent?". Pics are key. With these they had not a chance!

The wife and I are dual military and are command sponsored, so gonna take the whole family. We will be there right at Humphries, I'm sure thats just so they could give me one of the most troublesome companies a 1SG could have, but hey who's complaining.

My buddy just bought a 999S from Washington and had it shipped to SD. The bike had to have minimal fuel, and the battery had to be unplugged. The company built a crate for it and shipped it to him. When the crate arrived there was a picture perfect 999S sitting inside neatly tied down. He was very impressed with the service, and they kept him up to date with the tracking of it.

btw I've been to Humpries, Greives, and Casey before in Korea. I hope I never have to go back! I was there for 3 months, I feel bad for you for 3 years! atleast you have your family!

I just shipped my R6 from Hickam AFB to Scott AFB a few months ago and it could have been a lot worse. The lazy ass Hawaii shippers used metal straps to hold the bike steady. They put them over several blankets, but the metal straps worked themselve loose. Luckily, it was leaned over on all the packing material in the crate. The movers that unpacked it said to only use nylon straps. The AF TMO office req'd me to drain the fuel, but no issues with leaving the oil and coolant in. Net time I move, the Duc is going into the OEM crate.
