Any ideas how to keep garter snakes out of my garden?

I know they won't hurt but I fear them just the same. Is there anything I can put on my garden to keep them away or make them go away. We are losing green space and last year there were more than I want to see. I hate things that move faster than me and they are really fast. I am afraid to garden and I love it. HELP!
