Any help with basic exercise?

I thinking as far as sit-ups, push-ups, etc. for trying to lose weight. It's starting to get very cold outside where I live so ideally these would be exercises I can do in my house (I'm also about to start running as well, but I need a back-up when it's too cold or raining).

So what types of exercises should I do? How long/many should I do? How many times a week?

It doesn't matter to me if it takes a lot of time as long as I can take care of it in my house and can do it when I have any free time. Thanks!
