Any good ideas on how to improve writing workflow?

I do quite a lot of creative and academic writing (not in English though, so forgive me the mistakes).
I'm also the kind of a person for whom linear editing (e.g. in MS Word or any word processor) is frustrating, discouraging and just not compatible with my brain/way of thinking/etc.
However, I've recently come across the idea of mind mapping. I was very sceptical at first. You know, "oh well, just another allegedly great way of improving your work which actually does nothing".
I thought mindmapping was something like todo-lists are supposed to be a miraculous cure for procrastination - which for me they aren't... I simply look at them and just postpone everything.

But I tried them (the mindmaps), using the software called MindManager for Windows and... whoa, I was impressed. It made some aspects of my note taking and organisation just so much easier and better. It was something that really, genuinely helps and is simply perfect for my type of personality.

Now I'd like to ask if you know of any other ways of improving one's writing workflow. Are there other simple things I somehow missed which make your life as a writer much easier?
