i was thinking of getting an iphone today as i do have 800 dollars but i was hezitant to know if at&t was a good provider etc,

AT&T can be a great provider depending on your location. Check the AT&T map where you are located and spend time and see if the coverage is acceptable in that area. You can also try out AT&T for 30 days and cancel without problem. (only pay for what you use and restocking fee for phone.)
