Any advice to help progress my writing?

I am a: Guitar player, singer, song writer, and poet. As of right now I'm struggling with my poetry and was just wondering, do you find poetry more convincing when it rhymes, or doesn't rhyme? By the way, pretty much all of my songs are about love, broken hearts, and new starts
 
as long as the song delivers a message it does not matter if it rhymes or not, as an artist it is up to you if the song rhymes or not.

experience some more stuff & you will have more to write about or think back as deep as you can to the relationships and a simile or metaphor.

(S) the pain is as sharp as a double edged sword
(M) The love enveloped me into the sea or something...
