Any advice to help progress my writing?

I am a: Guitar player, singer, song writer, and poet. As of right now I'm struggling with my poetry and was just wondering, do you find poetry more convincing when it rhymes, or doesn't rhyme? By the way, pretty much all of my songs are about love, broken hearts, and new starts

Your words don't have to rhyme, but you need to use a complete sentence to make your image more colorful.

sometimes when it doesnt rhyme and u write in 3rd person (he, she instead of me, u) it makes it sound real good..
