I'm looking to switch careers and get into photography (paired with freelance writing). Any suggestions on how I can get started? I have a strong interest and good eye, but very little technical training.

You will really have to get a lot of technical training. Photography is a balance of intense knowledge of photographic technique, so much that you and your camera on "one" ... all your shots are intuitive and choosing the f/stop and shutter speed is nearly automatic. That has to be combined with a very creative eye and sense of spacial composition, design and use of lighting.

I am sure you didn't just start writing, but spent a lot of time learning how to construct sentences to paint a mental picture and combine them in paragraphs that capture the interest of the reader. Accuracy of the facts use to describe the elements of the story and indeed its believability, is just one of the corner stones of your writing. That I am sure did not happen overnight or because you had an excellent word processor and amazing printer.

That same applies to learning how to use a camera. A strong interest should get you through the four semesters of photography, but interest alone will never make you a photographer, especially if you intend to market the photos.

This link perhaps will explain the process.
