Any advice for my first outdoor photo shoot?

Well, I am definitely still learning about photography. But, I recently acquired an old Minolta 5000 35mm SLR with a few lenses. I've taken lots of candids of my kids and my own family, taken it to the zoo, and I took it hiking once or twice. I've learned a lot about the different kinds of film from trial and error, and from reading online.

But, my brother's birthday is coming up, and I'm thinking of offering to take pictures of him and his daughter as a gift to him. So, does anyone have any advice for me? I have a flash, but do I need some sort of reflector to keep shadows off their faces? If so, what can I use that doesn't cost too much money? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx!
Thanx Greenman! But, I'm still learning about the settings and such. Do you mean the aperture? If so, I've heard that term but I'm not really sure what it means. Lol! Sorry, like I said, still learning . . .
