Any advice for fishing for cod from the shore?

Mainly looking for advice on baits, methods and location from the shore.
Locations on the west coast of Scotland would be great, even if you don't want to share your secrets with the whole world, if you could send me an email or add me as a friend that would be greatly appreciated.
This advice is for my brother in law, and as a pike angler myself, I understand peoples opinions on sharing locations with everyone.

Any good advice would be welcome,
