Any Adjustments to Pass Smog for a 1993 Toyota Corolla?

I live in California and I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla. It's time to get it smogged and I'm worried it won't pass inspection. About 5,000 miles ago it started making a slight humming sound... like the normal engine sound but slightly louder... and also when it starts there is a very slight puff of black smoke (This puff has happened since I got the car 40,000 miles ago).

It burns about a half a quart of oil every 3,000 miles... not much.

Does anyone reccommend any minor adjustments that I can make? I have basic skills... I can change my oil and spark plugs, that kind of stuff, etc. Replaced my radiator once. Nothing extreme.

Also, if you know what that slight humming sound might be caused by, that would be nice to know.
Thanks for your help
