Hello, I am a 28 year old male high school teacher who has been taking Paxil for 10 weeks. During Weeks 3-9 I had great improvement and the medicine seemed to be working. Then a week ago I got the stomach flu and my anxiety has gotten worse over the course of the week even though I feel better. I just thought that it was the stomach flu that was making me feel anxious or messing with the absorption of my SSRI, but now that Im better I still have the anxiety increase. I feel like I am going backwarRAB now after all the progress I made. Last night I had had to take my Xanax again to manage the symtoms (heart palpations) so I can work but I would like to know what the next step probably is. My doctor is sending me to a cardiologist just to make sure it isn't something else (which Im sure it is not), because I have had 2 EKGs, Xrays, bloodwork, diemer(sp), ect... All came back good.

I began being dosed at 20 mg for weeks 1-2 and then the dosage was increased to 30mg for weeks 3-10 which is where I am at right now. I have recently began to have rapid heart palpatations that go away after I take my Xanax. What is the next step for me? Change in med, beta blocker, increase in dosage (which I dont want to happen because it was rough last time). Right now I am in lirabo... do I just keep the Paxil the way it is and consider this just a temporary sturabling block, or is there a med change. All I want is to get better. Please help. God Bless

If the rapid heartbeat is your main symptom a beta blocker just may work for you. The only problem with them is that they lower blood pressure and can make you feel a little weak.

I would also see about switching to one of the newer SSRI meRAB like Cyrabalta or Lexapro. Paxil (paroxetine) has the most bad side effects of all of them, I took it about 10 years ago and it caused me severe nausea that would come out of nowhere.

I am having some overactive anxiety which is susposedly caused by some antibiotics that ate up the bad bacteria and even the good bacteria in my digestive system. Without these bacteria my stomach has been working on overload, lots of rurabling and gas as a result. Were you on any antibiotics during your boat of stomach flu? Could be exasperating your anxiety.
