Hi,

I get anxiety when I travel away from home. This normally kicks in about 30 minutes to an hour away from home. The anxiety never amounts to much, it is uncomfortable and always feels like it will get worse but never really becomes panic. The problem is that this fear is keeping me from doing things I really want...

I have tried various therapies and I am challenging this fear and pushing myself more, using CBT techniques to rationalize.

Question, would medication such as Diazepam (valium) be likely to reduce this minor anxiety so I could have at least some hours traveling in peace...and also to have it as a back up to give me confidence to try going further.

I am aware of the dangers of the long term use/abuse of this kind of drugs and have been advised by a pharmacist how to use them safely.

The doctor has prescribed me 2mg diazepam which i haven't tied using yet.

Many thanks for any help or advice!

I would imagine it would help very much, but before taking it and jumping in the car, I would start using it as prescribed and see what impact that dosage has on you. If you feel impaired, certainly do not get in the car.

Everyone reacts very differently to medication, particularly narcotics, I have taken valium in the past and it made me very sleepy, but it might not have the same effect on you.

I am also prescribed another anti-anxiety medication, also in a small dose such as your, and I am instructed to take one twice a day. After being on it for some time, I began to drive again, and although I stay pretty close to home (for other health reasons), I feel completely normal on that regular dose to do anything.

It does allow me to do things I would otherwise not do, and I am thankful for that.

Thanks for that, you have really encouraged me...I am just hoping to build the confidence i need to be more mobile....really want to go on holiday so am building up to bigger things :)

Cheers and all the best! :)

Beautiful!

I am actually going on a little road trip tomorrow, for the very first time without my hubby.

My son goes to the same high school that I did, and our football team won our division and is playing for the state championships. The game is about 2 hours away. My 16 year old son is driving, so it will be just me and 4 teenagers going in our car. I am very excited, both for our team, but mostly for me, because it will be a challenge for me that will hopefully lead to more trips with my son and I.

I had 4 strokes about 7 years ago, and it has taken me this long to recover enough to even think of doing something like this. The strokes are what left me with the anxiety, and although I have been under lots of medication and lots of specialists, I only addresses this anxiety issue very recently. I am so happy I did, it has changed my life, honestly.

You can do it! keep me posted, I am interested.
