Anxiety at night; anything longer acting than Klonapin?

I have had terrible insomnia for about 6 months now and the only thing that lets me sleep is Klonapin. I take about .25 every night and I sleep like a rock for about 5 hours.
However, once I wake up I CANNOT fall back asleep.

I really like Klonapin because I dont feel drowsy the next day.

Is there anything (longer acting) or any way to help me get that one or two extra hours sleep?

Do they have an extended release version?

Thanks!

Is trazadone just a sleep aid or an anti anxiety as well?

Does it make any sense that I ONLY have anxiety at night?
I have these crazy racing thoughts and I am "scared" to fall asleep. I never had this problem before (I am 34 years old), but after a tough break up 5 months ago, my insomnia got so bad that I had to use something to calm my thoughts down.

I have zero anxiety during the day...

I'm not sure if Klonopin comes in an extended release or not. I would doubt it, because it has a rather long half life already. There are better drugs for sleep than Klonopin or similar benzos. A good sleep med is Trazodone at 50 mgs to 75 mgs. If you really want to stick with a benzo, then Valium is a much longer acting benzo, with a half life of about 8 days.

Thanks for the reply.
I really like Klonapin as I only use it at night and dont feel any after affect during the following day. However, I would like to slowly ween off of it.

Can I do the same thing with Trazadone?

Which is more addictive?

i have this at night mainly and sometimes wake up from it...seeing my dr this week to try and figure out why:(

Trazodone is an older tetracyclic antidepressant that never really caught on for use as an antidepressant because it is so very sedating. Doctors started to recognize it had better

Thank you for the response.
I have no desire whatsoever to take Klonapin other than at night. How then would it be more addictive than Trazadone?

It has to do with the chemistry of Klonopin and how it works in the brain by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This is completely different as to how a tetracyclic antidepressant such as Trazodone works on the brain.

I’m not saying that you should stop using Klonopin for sleep, I’m just suggesting that there are better drugs out there for sleep that do not loose their effectiveness due to tolerance and are not considered physically addictive. Benzos are very effective drugs for what they were desinged to do, but long term use for sleep problems due to anxiety was never one of them.

i take zopiclone, it is just a sleeping pill but is VERY effective and once you wake up there are no side effects from it, however it is a sleeping pill and not an anti anxiety med although i take it with my celexa.

I actually take both -- the clonopin for panic attacks and the trazadone at first for sleep; however now I have gone up to 200 mgs, at night and am using it as both a sleep aid and as a anti-depressant which it was originally intended for. My shrink said that trazadone is non-addictive; however not so with the clonopin.
