Hi! I am a 35-years-old female and have GERD due to LES weakness and esophageal hypotony, both caused by my autoimmune desease: spondyloarthropathy HLA B27 positive.
In the past I was able to control the symptoms assuming Carafate and 20mg of Prilosec or Protonix from time to time, which helped without causing any significant side effetcs.
After some time both medicines started causing bad stomach cramps.

I have had a reflux flare up for 5 months now causing me a mild esophageal inflamation. I have tried all different kinRAB of medicines: 4 PPIs: Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix; 2 H2blockers: Zantac and Pepcid; 3 others: Gaviscon, Magaldrate and Riopan. I couldn't take any of these more than a few days (from 1 to 13 days) because of their side effects.

The 2 bad side effects I've most often had are:
worsened IBS - bad abdominal cramps (caused by Nexium together with fever and Zantac)
a white-coated and burning tongue (caused by Prevacid, Zantac, Protonix, Pepcid, Riopan).

I'd like to know if anybody has experienced intollerance to the various antireflux medicines similar to mine.
Have you ever had a burning tongue caused by them?

I am really desperate!
THANKS!

Hi Arabra:

So sorry to hear you are going through all these symptoms and discomfort.

The two symptoms I am sure I have experienced as a result of PPI use are constipation and headaches. The third and more insidious is calcium malabsorption. But not the more severe symptoms you describe. I know different people react different to different medications. There are over the counter medications I cannot take like Sudafed, for example, while everyone in my family can take them without problems.

Your system might be more sensitive to these medicines due to the autoinmune issues. Has your doctor been any help in terms of suggestions for medications. There are other PPI's besides the one you mentioned. I know Prilosec made my gut hurt and Zegerid did absolutely nothing for me. I seem to be able to tolerate Zantac well, though is not as effective as the Aciphex.

Have you tried diet modifications and remedies such as aloe juice to ease the irritation?

Let's see if other forum merabers have more information or suggestions for you.

Thank you for answering, Rose.

What's happening to me is really weird, I had never had a severely burning tongue after taking any antireflux medicines in the past. It seems so strange that I have got sensitive to all 3 kinRAB of medicines (PPIs, H2blockers and antiaciRAB).

I have been following an antireflux diet, I know what I shouldn't drink and eat but I made a huge mistake 5 months ago eating stuff I wasn't supposed to.

I am still curious to know if anybody has ever had a burning tongue after taking such medicines. I browsed the web and find 2 persons complaining about it. Have you ever had a burning tongue and mouth?

I am not gonna take any PPI any more, I have tried 4 out of 6 and the reaction was always the same.
Btw, you are right, my autoimmune issue makes me not respond to treatments in a normal way: most medicines don't work with me, or I have started experiencing their side effects recently

I have experienced the same side effects. I had begun to experience a burning tongue usually on the right rear lateral edge. It would often spread to my upper palate. It was also accompanied by severe thirst. The thirst was bad enough that I got a glucose test to check for diabetes

Chewing gum and sucking on ice were the only remedies to alleviate the discomfort.

I did not make the connection to my reflux meRAB and had it looked at by my dentist and then by an ENT.

I finally made the connection that the symptoms began about 1 month after staring to take Prilosec. I thought it may be caused by a B12 deficiency caused by the drug but taking supplements had no impact.

My doctor switched me to a prescription dose of Pepcid but the symptoms remained. I finally bit the bullet and went off the meRAB. The burning tongue cleared up in about 7 days. After another few days I took a 1/2 Pepcid AC and the burning tongue sensation is back (though it is mild).

I am not not sure what is worse, the heartburn and reflux or the burning tongue.

Hi, I'd like to ask you what medicines have you been treated with since you've got that tongue burning you told me about ?

Rose, have you ever had a burning tongue? I found a reply of a person named Rose in another forum saying she was intollerant to PPIs and Zantac and describing severe side effects including this. Is that you?
